Site images

I will shortly be adding about 700 images to a site on my local testing server during the site construction. Before starting this task can you give any dos and donts for this, would like to get it done correctly first time.

The images each have a fairly long "product description" type name rather than an image number or reference and will be stored in the /images/product_images folder on the testing server.

How is it best to add the image information in the database, is the full path needed or just image name?

What is the best way to upload to the live server when that time comes?

The original images are jpgs and are either 2000 x 1333 pixels or 2000 x 3000 pixels so I was going to use the Image Resizer extension to produce image sizes of about 270 x 200 pixels for the site.

Any help would be appreciated to get this task right first time.
