Creating a password protected area

I am new to PHP and not really a programming type. I would like to have a directory with HTML files in it that can only be accessed by a user name and password. Is there a very basic tutorial that will help me set this up. I just want to record names and some very basic info and let folks create their own user names and passwords, that will allow them access into the directory.
