You may not have to add the background color to the stage in Photoshop, though. When ever I add a PowerGallery to a site, I open:
for the galleries I'm likely to be using, and in each of these stylesheets I remove the background-color: attribute from certain rules so that the background color will always be the same as the area I've placed the gallery in. So if my page background or container for the gallery has a certain background color, then that will show around the images. Seems much easier that way.
