Your description of it taking a long time makes me think that the connection to the SMTP server is timing out.
Did you change universal email to redirect to another page after the mail is sent?
if so remove the redirect, then add the following code at line 1:
it may be that a php error is occurring, but error reporting is turned off.
if there are no errors, contact the SMTP server admin and see if you can gain access to the error logs to determine why the email is not being relayed.
