Gallery thumbnail to Lightbox

I have a site where all the galleries are listed on a page as thumbnails showing the first image of each gallery and the title.

I am wondering if there is a way to get the Lightbox effect to be triggered by clicking the thumbnail instead of the way I have it now where it goes to that related Gallery. The client wants to bypass the large image and thumbnails altogether and go right into the lightbox.

Any thoughts on this from anyone would be appreciated!
