further to above, after retrying again, it did go through the checkout wizard. I backed up my site first, opened my cart page, went into checkout wizard, selected Website Payment Standard, entered the paypal email address etc, on the final page as my ecommerce pages are in a folder called framed-art-prints-photography/ I updated the page links for each page to be created to include this. Completed this and uploaded. Now when i test it and it goes to the new confirm page which includes the express checkout page button, clicking this returns an error, if I go through and add in billing info, it does not carry over to the shipping when button is checked, then on submitting this after going via the new confirm page, it goes to paypal but returns an error saying the cart is empty. This is so frustrating as I had this bit going through to paypal ok.

I think it seems to be updating the code in the checkout wizard leaving previous info in there rather than completely rewriting the checkout pages, which file does it create in the WA_ecart folder, can this be deleted first before I go into checkout wizard to ensure it doesn't add to previous code?
