I do not know who, where, or why advised me to insert that function, but I am clearly better off without it.
It would also be nice if once people have registered and/or validated, they were presented with a menu allowing them to click to get back to either the page they first came from (http:s//xxxxx.com/onlineclasses/) or else my site home page.
I am happy to make a backup copy and try introducing the relevant lines upon those user and validation pages, so I can revert if I mess things up. Seeking for your permission to do so first, in case you advise against it.
