I'm going to try to tackle the update file issue you reported in this thread. Please start a new thread for any other issues.

Your code actually looks correct to maintain the file field value. I'd need to debug this live to figure out why it doesn't work. Can I get a URL and FTP access to debug it? I'll do a few tests and figure out why it doesn't work properly.
