"an unidentified error has occurred" when building recordset

Migrated an older site to a new host, with replicated mySQL database on the new host. Obviously this means new connection criteria, which all work successfully with my DB tools. DW won't connect to the DB however with the listed generic error. The FTP definition is correct, everything transfers. The PHP version is appropriately set on the host. The MM_scripts have been deleted locally and on the host. DW still fails to build a mySQLi recordset, throwing the error. I even killed my local .dat cache file. No luck. I'm out of ideas - help!
