Ray, so this all works for the product insert page. I know need to do the product update page. How would I go about populating the multi-select list with what is already stored for the product? I guess I need to create a new recordset and then using the URL parameter, I would need to do a left or inner join with the catalog table and the category table (since the product insert page was creating records to the catalog table which consists of the product id and the category id), that makes sense right? problem is how would i then bind the results of this new recordset to my multi-select list code:

which is below:

php:
<select name="selectedCats[]" style="width: 260px;" multiple="" class="chosen-select">

                          <?php

while(!$rsParentCategories->atEnd()) { //dyn select

?>
                          <?php
$rsChildCategories
= new WA_MySQLi_RS("rsChildCategories",$ecartdb,0);
$rsChildCategories->setQuery("SELECT * FROM categories WHERE CategoryParentID = ?");
$rsChildCategories->bindParam("i""".($rsParentCategories->getColumnVal("CategoryID"))  ."""-1"); //colname
$rsChildCategories->execute();
?>
                          <?php

if ("".($rsChildCategories->getColumnVal("CategoryParentID"))  ."" "0") {  // WebAssist Show If
?>
                          <option value="<?php echo($rsParentCategories->getColumnVal("CategoryID")); ?>"><?php echo($rsParentCategories->getColumnVal("CategoryName")); ?></option>
                          <?php

// ("".($rsChildCategories->getColumnVal("CategoryParentID"))  ."" < "0")
?>
                          <?php
while(!$rsChildCategories->atEnd()) {
?>
                          <option value="<?php echo($rsChildCategories->getColumnVal("CategoryID")); ?>"><?php echo($rsParentCategories->getColumnVal("CategoryName")); ?> - <?php echo($rsChildCategories->getColumnVal("CategoryName")); ?></option>
                          <?php
  $rsChildCategories
->moveNext();
}
$rsChildCategories->moveFirst(); //return RS to first record
?>
                          <?php
  $rsParentCategories
->moveNext();
  }
//dyn select

$rsParentCategories->moveFirst();

?>
                        </select>
