The point of the Default File setting is to give a file name if no file is uploaded.

I understand that, but in an insert form wouldn't you just set your database field default value to be your default stock photo? I'm not sure I understand the point of Default File in an insert situation.

On an insert page, you can set it to be a stock file, but on an update page, you would want to retain the value that is already in the database.

Again I'm understanding that...so what is the point of the Default File option when creating an Update form? Or rather...why is it even there if it doesn't do anything?

to accomplish that, you create a hidden element, bind the hidden element to the image column in the recordset, and bind the default file setting to the hidden element.

doing this will ensure that if no file is uploaded, it will use the existing file name that is already in the DB.

I eventually sussed that from another post whereby I'd run into exactly the same problem but just hadn't remembered that the extension doesn't work without having to hand-code it.

As for the code order issue, I Will log a bug.

I do appreciate your help Jason, but I won't hold my breath on any bug logs as they simply aren't actioned. I've got 4 now that I can recall - some over a year ago.
