Thank you for your response. Unfortunately I must advise you that you are incorrect in your assumption that eWAY is a remote check out gateway and not a real time. I have contact the technical support of eWAY who have confirmed that the provide both types and that my clients account is configured for real time payment. I therefore still require the functionality of an order remitted to the customer from my site and also details of the transaction to be written to the database in the same manner as the PayPal gateway.

Whilst I would like the functionality of both gateways is there an easy way to remove the eWAY gateway without having to e-create the various checkout pages etc. This would allow me to move forward whilst trying to resolve the EWAY gateway.
