Combining an onchange event, for product lookup, with inventory control?

Is there any way to highlight the abs calculation that the cart is doing so that when a customer gets to the view cart page they are notified, even if it's just a line of text, that there was insufficient stock available to fulfill their quantity request? At the moment the abs calculation limits the number in the quantity field to the number that are available but this could easily be missed by the customer.

My client doesn't want to display the number that are in stock on the product detail page (which would save all this).

Another thought I had was if there was some way to dynamically validate the quantity field on the product detail page so that it wouldn't allow you to enter more than were showing as available in the first place.

Would appreciate your advice on the best solution.
Thank you.
