m I correct in thinking that I can add fields to the search behavior and if those variables are not present in the querystring then they will be ignored?

yes, if the variable is not present it is ignored in the search criteria

Secondly, how do I keep the original querystring intact while adding the additional variables from the Area link?

you need to rebuild the url variables in the link, and add the new value.

for example, if the url to load page is:

page.php?a=1&b=2&c=&d=4

you would rebuild the url using the following code:

php:
<a href="page.php?a=<?php echo(isset($_GET['a'])?$_GET['a']:""); ?>&b=<?php echo(isset($_GET['b'])?$_GET['b']:""); ?>&c=<?php echo(isset($_GET['c'])?$_GET['c']:""); ?>&d=<?php echo(isset($_GET['d'])?$_GET['d']:""); ?>">Link</a>

you could add another variable to this using a hard coded value:

php:
<a href="page.php?a=<?php echo(isset($_GET['a'])?$_GET['a']:""); ?>&b=<?php echo(isset($_GET['b'])?$_GET['b']:""); ?>&c=<?php echo(isset($_GET['c'])?$_GET['c']:""); ?>&d=<?php echo(isset($_GET['d'])?$_GET['d']:""); ?>&e=5">Link</a>
