I have xampp installed on several pc's on a home network. How can I set up 1 location for my site in the htdocs so that no matter what computer I happen to be using to edit and test my sites on....all use the same file ? I'm starting to go crazy with all the file saving onto flashdrives, then copying over to the next computer

I took an old PC and installed Ubuntu Server on it. There is a very nice installation wizard that asks you what to install. You just check the items you want and it installs them for you. You end up with the same thing as XAMPP plus a Linux server. After the install, you no longer need a keyboard, mouse, or monitor.
Plug it into your switch and you end up with a local testing server server on your network. You also have the benefit of another backup of your files. If you choose to install SAMBA, you can also store files from PCs, Macs, and Linux machines that can be access by any of the other machines on the network.

Let me know if you need any help. If there is enough interest I might be able to write a guide.

Here you go:
Setup a local standalone testing server

Let me know if anything needs clarification and I will add it to the guide. It's been awhile since I set one up so this is from notes and memory.

I just added a new article for this:
Configuring Samba - file and print server
http://www.ipvac.com/kb/entry/290/
This will setup your new server to allow sharing files with your other computers.

How did this turn out?
Do I need to add anything to the guides?

well I hit a snag. not due to your instructions though. My daughter unplugged the computer while I was about half way through. Ha, not a great outcome. So I am gonna try to wipe everything out and start over the next time she spends the night at grandma's house !!

I forgot to put the daughter warning in the guide. :)
When I first started programming (before the days of hard drives), I had my home computer plugged into the only convenient outlet. After about 4 hours of coding, a friend came over and asked why I had the light on in the middle of the day. He flip the switch off that controlled the outlet I had my computer plugged into. My program instantly vanished, never to return.
My first battery backup cost $600 and the piece of mind was worth every penny. I have never used a computer without a battery backup since, unless I was willing to lose whatever I was doing.
During the last storm, we lost power for an hour and a half and my main server never missed a beat. One of the big advantages of Linux servers is you don't have a monitor sucking up power.
