I am looking to take on a client with an existing store.
in trying to download their database by using export in phpmyadmin, i get the following error..
(hosted by 1 and 1 I think)
Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_STRING, expecting T_OLD_FUNCTION or T_FUNCTION or T_VAR or '}' in /*path*/codegen.php on line 154

I would think this was caused by some data in the Database being interpreted incorrectly.
First, Export the database one table at a time rather then the whole DB at 1 go, helpfully this will help you pinpoint which table is having the problem.
Once you pinpoint the table that is causing the problem, try different export settings, try using a CSV export, and [playing with the termination characters.
If all else fails, try using a different GUI Tool like Sequel Pro or Heidi SQL
